The following evening

“Come here, lover,” Aran beckoned Cole closer, a wide smile on his face. Cole struggled to smile back, but his stomach roiled even as he took Aran in his arms. He didn’t want to do this. He didn’t want to touch Aran, or anyone else except Kier.

Aran had locked him up, too, supposedly for his own protection. Cole had attempted to argue for Kier’s release, and that had been the result. Earlier that evening, though, the Imperator had freed him and invited him to his quarters. Even if the only thing Cole could focus on was Kier, he had, of course, complied. He’d gotten himself into this mess, and into the Imperator’s bed, and he had to deal with it.

Sadly, it was exactly in the Imperator’s bed that he found himself now. He’d had no choice but to please Aran sexually. While the Imperator had always been beautiful, Cole tended to imagine his golden hair was silver and his pale skin had a bluish tint to it. Today, after seeing Kier, merely touching Aran felt, for lack of a better word, wrong.

“You’re distracted,” Aran noted idly. With a sigh, he freed himself from Cole’s arms and left the bed. “I suppose it’s understandable. The elf’s appearance must have shaken you.”

Cole knew better than to allow Aran to dwell on that thought. The Imperator had already proven to be more dangerous than Cole had originally thought. If simply defending Kier’s life brought him imprisonment, just what kind of influence did he have on Aran?

As Aran covered his nudity in a robe and headed toward the balcony, Cole realized he had to intervene. He stopped Aran’s progress, hugging the Imperator from behind. “It did startle me a little,” he admitted. “I did not expect to see him here.”

Aran didn’t move away, but Cole couldn’t tell what the Imperator was thinking. “Are you angry that I sent you to the dungeon?”

Cole chuckled. “I would have preferred more luxurious surroundings, but it did set me straight. I thank you for that.”

The Imperator hummed thoughtfully and turned in Cole’s embrace. He brushed their lips together in a ghost of a kiss. “You’re so loyal to me, aren’t you?”

Cole nodded, feeling uncertain and apprehensive, but not really having another way out. “Prove it to me,” Aran continued.

“How?” Cole inquired as dread filled him.

The Imperator slipped out of the bedroom, and Cole followed behind him. He watched as Aran summoned the guards and gave them a commanding look. “Bring the elf here,” the Imperator ordered.

The guards saluted and left to comply with their ruler’s command. His mind whirling, Cole wondered what in the world he was going to do now. Whatever the Imperator had planned, it couldn’t be good for Kier’s well-being.

“You look so confused.” The Imperator smiled at him. “Come now. You don’t need to worry. You love me, don’t you?”

“You don’t even need to ask, Aran,” Cole replied. He hated uttering words of love to the Imperator when he had never even told them to Kier, but this was different.
